Iranian authorities have said construction of a wall closing about 300 km of border with Afghanistan is on track and good progress is being made.
Brigadier General Sirous Amanollahi, who was visiting the border project on Sunday, told IRNA that sealing the border with Afghanistan would ensure sustainable security along Iran’s easter borders.
Iranian officials have said in the past that closing the borders will prevent the illegal entry of migrants, insurgents, and drug and fuel smugglers.
Amanollahi noted that the project has made good progress, and said he hoped it would be finished by soon.
The border project involves the construction of a wall that stretches 295 km and the border with Afghanistan.
The wall, expected to cost just over $3 billion, will be four-meters high and will include fences on its top. In July, officials said the wall would take three years to be completed.
