The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the spread of Ebola caused by the “Bundibugyo” virus in Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has created an international public health emergency.
In its statement, the organization said that although the situation has not yet reached the level of a global pandemic, an emergency has been declared due to the spread of the disease, the rise in suspected deaths, and weak healthcare systems.
According to the report, as of May 16, 2026, eight confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases, and 80 suspected deaths have been recorded in Ituri Province. In addition, two people arriving from Congo tested positive for Ebola in Kampala, one of whom has died. Another confirmed case has also been recorded in Kinshasa.
