The Need for Urgent and Transparent Aid in the Wake of the Deadly Kunar Earthquake

The broad support and sympathy shown by Afghans from across the country toward the affected families reflects the living spirit of conscience within the nation. Likewise, the efforts of the Afghan government are commendable, as it undertook significant measures from the very first moments in the fields of rescue and urgent relief. Security and health institutions acted swiftly in rescuing people, transporting the wounded, and burying the dead. All of this demonstrates that the sense of national responsibility remains alive within the country.
On the other hand, the response of the international community to the cries of grieving Afghans is also a source of hope. Many countries and international organizations have pledged assistance, but what Afghans strongly emphasize is the implementation of these commitments. Our people have long heard lengthy lists of international promises, yet in practice, only a fraction has been delivered. To ensure that the victims of the Kunar earthquake are not subjected to new hardships, it is necessary for the international community to immediately turn its pledges into action and deliver urgent aid directly to the tents, destroyed villages, and mourning households of the affected people.
Another crucial aspect that must never be overlooked is the need for transparency. Past experiences show that aid has sometimes failed to reach the deserving recipients in the way it should. For this reason, it is essential that the government, aid organizations, and local community leaders conduct the distribution of aid in a transparent manner. If full attention is given to transparency, public trust will be strengthened, and assistance will reach grieving families in its rightful place.
In the present circumstances, the people’s greatest expectation from both the government and the international community is not to merely recall their pledges but to take immediate, practical steps. Urgent treatment for the wounded, shelter for displaced families, the delivery of food supplies, and the initiation of reconstruction in damaged areas are priorities that must be addressed without delay.
As always, Afghans stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of this tragedy, but the capacity of our people is limited. The international community must stand firmly beside Afghans in this time of mourning and provide practical cooperation to save the lives of the victims of the deadly Kunar earthquake. Long lists of promises alone cannot ease the pain of wounded children nor lessen the grief of families who have lost their loved ones.
Now the call of the moment is for the international community, the Afghan government, and all aid organizations to act together, with full transparency, to ensure that the victims of this deadly tragedy are not subjected to another catastrophe born of neglect and delay. True sympathy with the victims of the Kunar earthquake will only have meaning when helping hands are extended in practice, bringing once again a glimmer of hope to the lives of the affected families.
