Azizullah Norzai, head of the Herat Garment Manufacturers’ Union, confirmed that the consignment comprises roughly 80,000 pieces of apparel, with a total value approaching $300,000. He noted that the shipment features approximately 100 distinct designs, underscoring the sector’s capacity to produce diverse clothing lines capable of competing with imported goods.
Norzai further indicated that a significantly larger shipment of 200,000 garments is already in the pipeline and slated for export to Iraq in the near future.
The province’s production base is substantial. Abdul Qadir Akbari, head of the Herat Chamber of Craftsmen, reported that around 1,000 garment workshops are currently operational, each employing more than 50 workers. He attributed the growing international interest to the superior craftsmanship of local products, which has prompted foreign buyers to enter into export agreements with domestic manufacturers.
Herat’s producers are increasingly positioning themselves as regional contenders. Norzai stated that local factories are capable of manufacturing apparel that aligns with the design specifications and quality standards of markets such as Iran and Turkiye. He highlighted a significant shift in the industry: while local products were once sold under foreign brand names, manufacturers are now successfully exporting goods under authentic Afghan labels to global markets.
In a move to bolster the sector, Bashir Mohammad Sirat, Director of Industry and Commerce for Herat, announced an increase in tariffs on imported goods that directly compete with domestically produced garments. Simultaneously, his department is working to lower tariffs on essential raw materials, aiming to reduce production costs and further stimulate export growth.
The inaugural shipment of Herat-manufactured clothing was recently exported to Iraq as well, marking the beginning of what officials hope will be a sustained trade partnership. Industry leaders remain committed to expanding their footprint in regional and international markets by strictly adhering to global standards.
