The former Afghan ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Omar Zakhilwal says he will join a presidential election ticket that is acceptable to both Afghans and the international community.

In an exclusive interview with a local Afghan news channel, Zakhilwal said he would not be an independent runner in upcoming presidential poll; rather he would support a ticket trustworthy for Afghans and the international community.

“I’ll see who has a proper strategy and plan for peace to steer the country out of the current crisis,” Zakhilwal said.

Zakhilwal termed the release of Taliban co-founder, Mullah Baradar, a positive step toward peace but stressed that peace cannot be restored by symbolic meetings.

“To succeed the peace process, practical measures are needed,” the former ambassador stated.

According to him, Pakistan has not taken any major step in this direction so far.
