The US Vice President Mike Pence spoke with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and congratulated the Afghan nation on the steady advance of democracy in the country.
“Vice President Pence spoke by phone to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani earlier today. He congratulated the Afghan people on the steady advance of democracy following the parliamentary elections this past weekend,” the White House said in a statement.
The statement further added “He commended the Afghan election officials and military for leading and managing the electoral process, and US and international forces for their support to the Afghan government.”
“Despite efforts by the Taliban to intimidate the Afghan people, millions of people stepped forward to make their voice heard by voting,” the US Vice President added.
The voting process for the parliamentary elections kicked off in 32 provinces of Afghanistan on Saturday, except Ghazni and Kandahar provinces, where the polls have been suspended due to the recent political and security upheavals.
The Independent Election Commission officials are saying that around four million people have cast their votes during the parliamentary elections on Saturday and Sunday across the country.
