Two senior officials detained for taking bribes

Two high-ranking officials have been arrested on charges of taking bribes and involvement in embezzlement in eastern Nangarhar province, the governor’s spokesman said on Monday.

Attaullah Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News the general manager of the documentation and communications at the governor’s office, Baseer Ahmad, was detained red-handed while taking $1,000 in bribe.

The detainee was referred to the attorney general office in compliance with orders from Governor Hayatullah Hayat. Ahmad had sought the bribe from Imtiaz Khan, promising to expedite the process of issuing him with a permit for setting up a fuel station.

Khogyani said Baseer Ahmad was detained in the presence of prosecutors and the crime branch police personnel late on Sunday. The fuel station documents had been signed by the governor three days back and the manager wanted to take advantage of it and collect $1,000 from Imtiaz.

Zabit Khan, head of martyr family affairs at the governor’s house, was also arrested for taking bribes from relatives of the injured and martyred families from Achin district in return for registration.

He said the applicant registered a complaint against Zabit Khan and the crime branch police personnel and prosecutors had been directed to initiate legal proceedings against the detainee.

In a separate incident, an individual has been arrested in Kabul on charge of taking up to 600,000 Afghanis in bribe from people, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said Monday.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, the individual has been arrested by the personnel of the Major Crimes Task Force.

The statement further added that the suspect had taken a sum of 580,000 Afghanis from 10 people, charging each 58,000 Afghanis promising that he would recruit them in one of the educational institutions of police.

The Ministry of Interior also added that the individual was arrested during an operation which was conducted by the Major Crimes Task Force in the vicinity of the 5th police district of the city on Sunday.
