More than 10,000 Pakistanis have registered themselves as Afghan refugees in an effort to filch UNHCR dollars, an official says.
The UN High Commission for Refugees paid $400 to each Afghan refugee returning to their homeland under a voluntary repatriation scheme.
National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Chairman Usman Yusuf Mobeen made the disclosure at a meeting of the Senate standing committee on interior.
Mobeen informed lawmakers cases of fake identities were detected when the applicants came to NADRA offices to obtain their cards, which had been blocked.
Around a million Afghan refugees had been repatriated to Afghanistan under the voluntary repatriation scheme, he said.
There were 2.4 million registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan at one time, according to Mubeen. Another 1.5 million unregistered Afghan refugees are also living in the country.
