More than 220,000 people enrolled in a 22-day top-up voter registration in Afghanistan that ended on Saturday, officials said.

The figure is in sharp contrast with what the Independent Election Commission had expected. The commission had expected two million people to enroll in the new drive.

Head of IEC secretariat Habibur Rahman Nang, said that the figure is convincing, but election watchdogs said that the figure is way below the expectations.

Yosuf Rasheed, head of Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan, said that IEC could not properly spread public awareness on the drive due to lack of coordination and weak management.

Afghanistan’s presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 28.

Nang said that all preparations were being taken to hold the vote on due time, but election watchdogs are pessimistic.
