The government has commended Afghan security forces’ efforts for protecting civilian lives and securing the presidential elections against Taliban attacks.
“Their success is evident from UNAMA’s figures, which indicate a decrease of approximately 40% in election-day civilian casualties compared to parliamentary polls.”
Commenting on UNAMA’s report on civilian casualties, the National Security Council said the government had been faced with an enemy that relentlessly targeted civilians.
“We are taking concrete steps to protect civilians from enemy attacks, faced with an enemy that relentlessly targets civilians.”
The statement gave a snapshot of the progress the government has made in protection of civilians, mitigation and relief.
It said the security forces seized at least 9.5 tons of explosives this quarter, with the National Disaster Management Authority, together with the security organs, saved countless lives by clearing 26,004 unexploded ordnances, IEDs and antipersonnel mines this quarter.
“As the Afghan Air Force grows, we have instituted stronger measures on targeting, reconnaissance and post-attack assessments to reduce casualties and improve data gathering.”
The statement added the Ministry of Refugee had helped 126,913 conflict-affected families with basic emergency supplies this year.
Separately, the Afghan National Disaster Management Authority helped 11,194 conflict-affected families in the third quarter. About 1,076 civilians injured and martyred have received government compensation.
“Contrary to humanitarian norms, the enemy continued to attack hospitals and educational centres. The terrorists destroyed or damaged nine hospitals, denying people the right to life and life-saving care.
“They have destroyed tens of schools and killed over 480 teachers, students and other education workers since 2017,” the statement explained.
