Sources from southern Helmand province say that clashes are still ongoing at the 215 Maiwand Corps which came under attack early on Friday morning.
The military base is located at Camp Shorab in Helmand
According to the security sources, some attackers have hidden at one part of the military base inside armored vehicles
The Ministry of Defense said on Friday evening that the attack ended after 16 hours.
The ministry said 23 security force members were killed and 16 others were wounded in the clashes.
Reports, however, say that at least 40 members of the Afghan Army have been killed in the attack.
Ministry of Defense said that 20 militants including eight suicide bombers were killed in the attack.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
