Over 72,000 people left Afghanistan in a single week, IOM reports

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that between August 18 and 24, a total of 72,624 people left Afghanistan, heading primarily for Iran and Pakistan.

According to the IOM, the number of people leaving Afghanistan during this period was 11 percent higher than the number of those returning to the country.

The report also noted that at least 64,950 Afghan citizens returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan during the same period.

Overall, the total number of people either leaving or returning to Afghanistan increased by 21 percent compared to the previous week.

Among those who left Afghanistan, 51 percent were bound for Iran.

Additionally, a recent report by the United Nations indicated that nearly 700,000 Afghan migrants have returned from Pakistan to Afghanistan between September 11, 2023, and July 31, 2024.
