Nangarhar & Laghman: Miller vows to protect civilians

The new Resolute Support mission (RS) commander) has assured the Nangarhar government of protecting civilian lives in the war-hit province, an official said on Wednesday.

Gen. Austin Scott Miller held out the assurance during a meeting with governors and police chiefs of Nangarhar and Laghman provinces at the 201st Selab Military Corps compound on Tuesday.

Attaullah Khogyani, the Nangarhar governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Corps Commander Maj. Gen. Mohammad Zaman Waziri briefed Miller on their activities, achievements and other issues.

Meanwhile, Laghman Governor Mohammad Asif Nang floated suggestions for boosting security around governmental institutions and stepping up the peace process to stabilise the region.

His Nangarhar counterpart Hayatullah Hayat shared ideas about changes to the recruitment of army personnel. He also stressed special attention to the protection of civilians, enhancing the peace process and ensuring election security.

Miller assured the governors of implementing their ideas and suggestions. He also promised efforts to save civilian lives during operations and raids.

According to another report, UK’s Deputy Ambassador Giles Lever also met Hayat and a number of other officials during his visit to Nangarhar.

Khogyani said, Lever commended the governor’s fight against corruption during the visit to Jalalabad airport. He vowed more support for the provincial administration in this regard.

Hayat spoke of security and other issues like social, academic, economic development of the province. He also spoke about upcoming elections, peace, counter-corruption, revenue generation and other issues.

The British diplomat commended the governor’s campaign against corruption and reassured him of full support in the campaign to curb raft.
