Khalild, Swaraj discuss security cooperation

The acting minister of defense of Afghanistan Asadullah Khalid met with the external affairs minister of India Sushma Swaraj.

The Ministry of Defense in a statement said on Sunday Asadullah Khalid Acting Defense Minister met with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi on Sunday, Feb. 23.

The statement further added “In this meeting, both sides discussed bilateral cooperation. Acting Defense Minister Assadulllah Khalid appreciated positive support extended by India to the Afghan Government particularly to the Afghan National Defenses and Security Forces.”

“Indian External Affairs Minister assured of her country’s lasting support to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and stressed on India’s military assistance with Afghan Security Forces,” the statement said.

India has played a major role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban regime and has invested over $2 billion in various reconstruction and infrastructure projects.

The government of India pledged a fresh aid package of $1 billion to support the reconstruction projects in Afghanistan during a visit by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in late 2016.

The two countries have also developed a high level of cooperation in terms of military and security during the recent years.
