At least 17 people were wounded in rocket attacks in Kabul city on Tuesday morning while President Ghani placed a wreath at the Minaret of Independence to mark Afghanistan’s Independence Day.
At least 14 rockets were fired in different parts of Kabul city, including eight launched from PD16 and six from PD17, a security source said, adding that “all rockets were launched from two Toyota “Corolla” vehicles.
Eyewitnesses said that the rockets landed in Wazir Akbar Khan, Sherpur, first Macroryan and Shashdarak areas of Kabul, and that several wounded people have been taken to the hospital.
At least seven people were wounded in rocket blasts in the surrounding area of the Presidential Palace, a source said.
However, officials at the Palace have not yet confirmed the incident.
10 other people were wounded in different parts of the city, according to eyewitnesses.
The Ministry of Interior said that at around 9:30 am on Tuesday morning several rockets were fired from two moving vehicles in areas PD16 and PD17 of Kabul city, adding that details will be provided as they become available.
No group including the Taliban claimed responsibility for the incidents.
The rocket attacks started after President Ghani placed a wreath at the Minaret of Independence at the Ministry of Defense to mark Afghanistan’s 101st Independence Day.
This national holiday honors Shah Amanullah Khan’s founding of the nation in 1919.
