Three women and a child have been killed by a Taliban-fired mortar shell in the Sayad district of northern Sar-i-Pul province, residents and officials said on Monday.

An inhabitant of the locality, who declined to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News that two mortar shells struck two houses in the Biland Ghori area of the district late on Sunday night.

He said two women were killed in one house and a child and woman in another. The resident did not have exact information as to who had fired the shells.

But Governor Mohammad Zahir said he had received two different reports. One report says the shells were fired by the Taliban and the second claims the civilians were killed on charges of spying for the government.

On the other hand, the militants denied killing civilians, accusing the security forces of firing the mortar shells into the houses. The group claimed seven civilians, including children. But security officials rejected the Taliban version.
