The Jaghato district of southern Ghazni province has been recaptured by the security forces, the government claimed on Sunday.

The Taliban had gained control of the district in the north of the province — an insurgent stronghold — two years ago.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defense said the security forces conducted Operation Mobeen, involving airstrikes, to retake Jaghato.

A number of landmines were defused during the operation, the ministry said, adding the Taliban suffered heavy casualties.

With the Taliban yet to react to the official claim, the statement did not give information about military or civilian causalities.

With the recapture of Jaghato, Malistan, Jaghori, Ajristan and Nawor districts have regained access to the provincial capital.
