A primary military court has sentenced a former Public Order Police commander in the north to 10 years in prison and fined him 8.6 million Afghanis on corruption charges, a well-placed source said on Sunday.
The former commander, Haseebullah Qureshi, was removed from his official position last year and the Shaheen Military Corps had said he would be tried over alleged corruption.
A source in the Ministry of Defense, wishing anonymity, said Qureshi should have been tried in Mazar-i-Sharif but he demanded his trial in Kabul but even then he did not appear before the court.
Qureshi sent his lawyer to the court and sought 10 days to be able to appear before judges but after 10 days he did not turn up.
The source said the court then sentenced Qureshi to 10 years in jail and imposed 8.6 million Afghanis cash penalty. The source said charges against Qureshi were ‘grave’ and should have been punished severely.
