Civilians killed in Khost airstrike: AIHRC

Civilians were killed in a recent airstrike by US forces in southeastern Khost province, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) said on Tuesday.

The drone strike by the US troops in Alisher district killed six members of a family on Saturday night, the rights panel said in a statement.

It verified claims of the civilian killings, including a child and three women and condemned the airstrike.

The commission called for a thorough investigation and documentation of such incidents for the sake of justice and compensation to the victims.

The AIHRC said it had repeatedly urged parties to the conflict to respect human rights and refrain from targeting innocent civilians.

US forces, however, said the Taliban were the target of the air raid. They also acknowledged receiving reports about civilian casualties, saying they were working with local officials to find out the truth.

Earlier, Wolesi Jirga member Haider Jan Naeemzoy alleged five civilians from one family had been killed in the airstrike.

He identified the dead as Malalai, daughter of Noorajan, Mulano, daughter of Gulochi, Noor Bibi, daughter of Khatol, Noorajan, son of Mangavi, and driver Mulla Nabi, son of Eid Gul.

Provincial Council Member Janmir Zazai confirmed the incident and said four members of a family and their driver were killed in the raid.

He said three women and one man from were killed. He also suggested the driver might have had links with the Taliban.

The individuals visited a clinic in the Chargotai locality of Alisher district.  Aminullah, head of the clinic, confirmed they visited the facility and went back after treatment.

He said at 11:30 pm they left the clinic but in the morning he heard they had been killed in an airstrike.
