The United States of America should withdraw its troops from Afghanistan in an orderly and responsible manner, says China.

An orderly U.S. military pullout was important to prevent further escalation of violence in Afghanistan, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said.

At a regular media briefing in Beijing on Thursday, Zhao Lijian said intra-Afghan negotiations had opened a window of opportunity for realising peace in Afghanistan.

Both sides — the Afghan government and the Taliban — would put the national interest first and seize the opportunity to find common ground, the official hoped.

China had always supported an “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned” inclusive peace and reconciliation process, the spokesman added.

The international community, including the U.S., should play a constructive role in advancing intra-Afghan talks, he said.

“At the same time, we believe that no one should arbitrarily interfere in the peace and reconciliation process,” Zhao stressed.

Promote security and stability was a prerequisite for peace, reconciliation, reconstruction and development in Afghanistan, the official maintained.
