In a daring move, hundreds of people rose up in arms on Tuesday against Monday night multi-pronged attack by Taliban insurgents on this capital city of northern Sar-d-Pul province.
The residents, who gathered at Guzar Shahan mosque in Sar-e-Pul city, said they took the arms in support of security forces to jointly prevent the city from falling into the hands of insurgents.
Declaring their support for the security forces, who repelled Monday night’s attack by the Taliban, asked the government not to commit further negligence in maintaining security of Sar-e-Pul City.
On Monday night, Taliban gunmen stormed the Sar-d-Pul City from three sides and local government forces put up resistance using all available resources.
Mohammad Noor Rahman Rahmani, the Provincial Council chief, said the local government used all resources in the Monday night fight against the Taliban.
According to reports, the Taliban captured eight security posts.
Usman Khan, head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS), said the national unity government always strived to keep security of the people.
He said the existing security forces in Sar-e-Pul could only ensure security of the provincial capital.
He said commando forces and Special Forces had arrived in the province to drive back the enemy forces.
