Afghan Leaders, Khalilzad Discuss US-Taliban Draft Agreement

President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah in a meeting with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, discussed the draft framework agreement between the US and the Taliban, top presidential advisor Waheed Omer said. 

Mr. Omer said in a tweet that the draft framework agreement was shown to President Ghani and that discussions with Ambassador Khalilzad and team will continue.

Mr. Omer, who is head of the Office of Public and Strategic Affairs of the Afghan government, said more details about the document will be provided later by President Ghani’s spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah’s Office said in a statement that Mr. Abdullah met with Mr. Khalilzad and was briefed about recent US-Taliban talks in Doha.

The statement said that Mr. Khalilzad will meet with all stakeholders during his Kabul visit.

Mr. Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Sunday evening after he wrapped up the ninth round of talks with the Taliban which was aimed at reaching a peace deal with the group.
