Some Meshrano Jirga or upper house members on Sunday termed sodomy allegations in boys’ schools in central Logar province as a conspiracy and demanded its investigation.
The senators expressed their concerns about the issue a week after Guardian newspaper published an investigative report about sexual misuse of male school students in Logar.
The Guardian report says 546 boy students of six schools in Logar were sexually misused by a circle of teachers, senior students and powerful figures.
A number of the victims whose videos were leaked on Facebook are killed, the report said.
On Saturday, the Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament appointed an eight-member team to investigate allegations of sodomy in boys’ schools in the province.
Earlier, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has appointed a team to investigate allegations of sodomy in boys’ schools in Logar.
A MoE statement received by Pajhwok Afghan News said the ministry was closely observing the performance of all workers of the ministry including teachers.
It said all national and international media outlets should use academic and acceptable standards for investigating such allegations.
Senator Mohammad Akbar from Logar province termed the issue “as baseless” and said civil society institutions in Logar had raised the issue for their immigration in foreign countries.
“Logar issue is about the honor of Afghanistan and education of the country, we want investigation into the issue.”
Gulalai Akbari, another senator from northeastern Badakhshan province, termed the Logar issue as untrue and called for serious investigation into the matter.
Senate second deputy chairman Mohammad Asif Sadidi said it was a conspiracy and Afghanistan’s enemies were trying to stop parents from sending their children to school.
He called for the arrest of those involved in spreading the baseless allegations in social media.
A number of other senators held similar views and demanded a serious investigation into the incident.
