Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission said on Tuesday that the main door of its data center was opened to help two members of Rapid Response Unit police get warm.

This comes as Abdullah Abdullah’s team has claimed that the data at the digital center were altered in an organized night raid that happened in collusion with President Ashraf Ghani’s team. It specifically said that the raid targeted quarantined biometric devices and urged IEC not to upload data from them.

Speaking at a press conference, IEC chief Hawa Alam Nuristani confirmed that the main door of the data center was opened, but said that sensitive materials were not harmed.

Aurangzeb, an IEC, commissioner said that the door was opened by an IEC employee to help two policemen get warm.

“A mistake happened out of emotions and ignorance, but it should not be exaggerated,” he said.

Another IEC official said that the door was opened in coordination with the security adviser of IEC’s secretariat.

“We are accountable to people, confusion should not be created in public mind, this election was the most transparent election,” head of IEC’s secretariat Habib-ur-Rahman Nang said.
