The Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday reported 1,722 new positive cases of COVID-19 out of 5,053 samples tested in the last 24 hours.
The ministry also reported 94 deaths and 391 recoveries from COVID-19 in the same period –the highest reported death toll from COVID-19 in a single day in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has so far recorded 96,531 positive cases and 3,842 deaths from COVID-19.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of deaths from COVID-19 globally is more than 3,824,115 and the number of known global coronavirus cases is 176,703,325.
With the increase of positive cases, demands for oxygen for COVID-19 patients have also increased.
The health officials said that daily, hundreds of COVID-19 patients are coming at the hospitals for treatments while “daily about 300 hospitalizing which most of them are over 40.”
Previously, health officials warned the people to consider the advice of the Ministry of Public Health and to wear masks and practice social distancing. “Otherwise, the country will face a disaster,” the officials said.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Public Health on Monday said that Afghanistan is faced with a lack of oxygen for COVID-19 patients and that the ministry has not succeeded in coping with the challenge despite installing oxygen processing equipment at hospitals.
Moreover, amid the sharp rise in coronavirus cases and deaths in the country, Afghans are visiting COVID vaccine centers in large numbers to get vaccinated, doctors said.
Afghanistan started vaccination this week after the arrival of 700,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from China.
Figures show that so far over 656,000 people have been vaccinated in the country. Over 121,000 of them are health workers and more than 81,000 are teachers.
