US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman via phone on Monday, discussing the situation in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Yemen, the US State Department said in a statement.
They discussed their support for a ceasefire in Afghanistan over the coming Eid and peace in Afghanistan more broadly, the statement read.
Afghan government and the Taliban held unprecedented ceasefires during the last Eid in June. The government extended its ceasefire, but the group refused to follow suit. The next Eid will start on Tuesday.
This comes as efforts have been intensified for second truce with the Taliban militant group, which has been relentlessly targeting Afghan forces since the expiration of the rare three-day ceasefire during Eid-ul- Fiter days. Though the Afghan government extended the first armistice as gesture of goodwell for ten days, the Taliban refused to follow suit.
In addition, during the call, Pompeo thanked the crown prince “for Saudi Arabia’s support for northeast Syria’s urgent stabilization needs” and Riyadh’s “engagement with the Iraqi government.”
They also reviewed the UN Special Envoy’s work to resolve the conflict in Yemen and other topics of mutual interest.
