Mawlavi Mohammad Qasim Amiri, director of mines and petroleum in Panjshir, told Bakhtar News Agency that local residents reported the deposit as authorities continue efforts to identify and evaluate the province’s mineral resources.
He said a specialized technical mining team has been deployed to survey and assess the site.
Following field surveys, sampling, and technical evaluations, the team will determine the quantity and quality of the deposit.
If the findings are confirmed and all necessary legal procedures are completed, the turquoise will be extracted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, Amiri said.
Turquoise is a precious and semi-precious gemstone that occurs in shades of blue, blue-green, and green. It has long been used in jewelry, including rings and necklaces, as well as in decorative items, and is commercially valued for its distinctive color and appearance.
Its value depends on factors such as color, purity, uniformity, hardness, size, and overall quality, with evenly colored blue turquoise typically commanding a higher price.
Panjshir is also known to have confirmed deposits of emerald, tourmaline, green garnet, and approximately 17 other types of minerals, some of which are currently being mined.
