The Herat Chamber of Commerce and Investment has announced that over 10,000 square meters of handwoven carpets, valued at $103,000, have been exported from the province to Germany since the start of the current fiscal year.
Mohammad Yousuf Amin, Executive Director of the Chamber, stated that Afghan carpets—particularly those woven in Herat enjoy a distinguished reputation in global markets, owing to their superior quality, authentic traditional motifs, and time-honored weaving techniques. He added that the Chamber is actively working to boost sales by strengthening ties with international buyers and streamlining export procedures.
Meanwhile, local carpet producers have urged the government and relevant agencies to facilitate their participation in major international exhibitions, which would help them secure entry into new and lucrative markets.
In response, officials from Herat’s local administration reaffirmed that supporting domestic industries remains a top priority. Mufti Mohammad Yusuf Sayedi, spokesperson for the Herat governor, noted that the administration, in coordination with economic bodies, is focused on cultivating robust domestic and foreign markets for local goods especially carpets while providing comprehensive backing to artisans and exporters.
Carpet weaving stands as one of Afghanistan’s most vital handicrafts, serving as a key source of employment and export revenue. Officials further reported that ten shipments of carpets were exported from Herat to international destinations last year, underscoring a steady upward trajectory in demand for Afghan carpets across global markets.
