Wishing the Afghans Eid Mubarak, United Nations top diplomat in Kabul on Monday strongly urged all parties to the conflict to stop violence and respect this time of reflection and tolerance.
“As we celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr around the world after a month of fasting and worship, I wish all Afghans Eid Mubarak on behalf of the United Nations in Afghanistan,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
In a statement on the eve of the religious festival that marks the end of the holy month of fasting, the UN envoy called on the warring parties to stop violence in order to allow all Afghans to commemorate this auspicious and important celebration peacefully.
“I sincerely hope the sense of solidarity marked by this occasion will continue well into the future, allowing for the peace that all Afghans want and deserve.”
Yamamoto said the United Nations continued to stand with the people of Afghanistan in their quest for stability and prosperity.
Meanwhile, British Ambassador to Afghanistan Ms Alison Blake MG issued a statement, saying “during these important days of celebration, I would like to wish everyone a peaceful and joyful Eid-al-Fitr.”
“Eid is a time to celebrate the end of a month of reflection, devotion and personal sacrifice. The spirit of Eid is one of peace, cooperation and compassion.”
She prayed the Eid might bring the world all together to build a prosperous, peaceful and united future for all the people of Afghanistan.
She said the UK would continue to work together with Afghanistan to build a prosperous and peaceful future for all. “I wish everyone a peaceful and happy Eid – Eid Mubarak!”
