Stray mortar hits school, leaves 4 student dead

A mortar struck a school in Afghanistan’s central-eastern Ghazni province on Saturday, killing at least four students, officials said.

Seventeen others were wounded in the incident which happened in Mullah Noh Baba in Andar district. They included 15 students and two teachers, the provincial governor’s office said in a statement.

The mortar hit the school during fighting between Taliban militants and Afghan forces, the statement said.

It remains unclear which side fired the mortar, the statement said adding a team was tasked to investigate.

Civilian deaths in Afghanistan hit record high last year when 3,804 were killed, according to the United Nations.
