The latest summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) once again highlighted Afghanistan’s important role in the security, stability, and economic future of the region. The remarks by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who described peace and stability in Afghanistan as essential to regional security and sustainable development, conveyed a positive and significant message about Afghanistan’s place in regional cooperation.
President Mirziyoyev proposed the resumption of regular dialogue between the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and representatives of Afghanistan to discuss regional security concerns, Afghanistan’s economic development, and the country’s integration into regional cooperation mechanisms. Such an approach demonstrates a growing recognition that Afghanistan’s future is closely linked to the future of the wider region.
Afghanistan holds a unique geographical position connecting Central and South Asia. In this context, Islamic Emirate spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has also emphasized that Afghanistan’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is in the interest of the region. He noted that Afghanistan is an important part of the region from economic, security, political, and social perspectives, and called on the member states of the organization to recognize this importance.
Mujahid’s call reflects Afghanistan’s desire to play a more active role in regional cooperation and to engage directly with neighboring and regional countries on shared security concerns, economic opportunities, and connectivity. Given Afghanistan’s geographical and strategic position, greater engagement with the country can create opportunities for broader regional cooperation.
