More than 220 million passenger trips are expected to be made across China on Wednesday — the 13th day of the country’s 40-day Spring Festival travel rush that started on January 26, according to data collected by a special work team overseeing travels during the holiday season.
Of the total number of passenger trips on Wednesday, over 200 million are estimated to be made on highways, more than 12.9 million on railways, approximately 620,000 on waterways and some 2.18 million by air.
To deal with the increasing travel needs, the national railway network planned extra 1,789 passenger trains on Wednesday. Due to the impact of the recent freezing rain, staff members with the railway network have sped up efforts to clear ice and snow on the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway running from the north to the south, to ensure smooth and safe trips for passengers the next day.
As for the highway passenger transportation, several expressway sections have been closed due to freezing rain in central China’s hard-hit Hunan Province. Hunan’s neighboring province of Hubei has also been seriously impacted by the sleet weather. As of 16:00 Wednesday, there had been 180 kilometers of congested sections on expressways across Hubei. It was expected that all traffic congestion points will be cleared by Thursday morning.
In response to the challenging weather conditions, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transport has urgently allocated 141 million yuan (about 19.6 million U.S. dollars) to support those affected provinces to restore and ensure the smooth traffic on highways.
On Tuesday, or the 12th day of the travel rush, a total of 232.879 million passenger trips were made nationwide, a 7.9-percent increase compared to the previous day, which is up 5.8 percent over the same period of 2023 and 1.1 percent over 2019.
The Spring Festival travel rush, also known as “chunyun,” will see hundreds of millions of people return home and reunite with their friends and families.
This year’s Spring Festival holiday season runs from Feb 10 to 17.
