The Kingdom of the Netherland and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation contributed USD 17,000,000 to assist the Government of Afghanistan, through the technical assistance of United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), for the Afghanistan Urban Safety and Security Programme (AUSSP).
According to UN Habitat, the AUSSP is being implemented with technical assistance of UN-Habitat in partnership with municipalities, and Deputy Ministry of Municipalities (DMM), Ministry of Urban Development and Land (MUDL), Ministry of Interior, (MOI), and Ministry of Women Affairs (MoWA), in 8 strategic cities across the country since 2015.
The programme focuses on women, men, girls and boys in the cities with the purpose of strengthening citizen trust in their local and national governments authorities, by supporting improved social & governance relationships by bridging the gap between communities and their governing authorities to facilitate: safe, secure and inclusive urban neighborhoods in cities as active stakeholder participants in the governance and social systems.
The activities are implemented at the community, municipal and national levels, adopting the concept of Safety and Security that encompasses holistic socio-economic issues, and which address crime prevention, through community policing, and crime prevention measures.
To respond to the needs, The Kingdom of Netherlands and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation supported the programme from 2015 through two phases (Phase I Afghanistan Urban Peacebuilding Programme AUPP and Phase II Afghanistan Urban Safety and Security AUSSP).
In close collaboration with IDLG/DMM, MUDH, MoWA MoIA/ Police-e-Mardumi, Municipalities, Community Development Councils (CDC) and Civil Society Organizations the programme is being implemented.
