Suhail Shaheen, spokesman for The Taliban Qatar political office says we welcome the release of at least 300 of their prisoners by the Afghan government over the past three days, but insists that process be expedited to “save them” from the-COVID19, and to advance closer to intra-Afghan talks.
The release of prisoners is an important step in the peace process and reduction of violence.
According to the Office of National Security Council (ONSC), the Afghan government so far has released more than 748 Taliban inmates from the jails.
Taliban support for the first time since the process prisoner released began a month ago.
Before that, The Taliban had accused the Afghan government of delaying the prisoner swap that was part of an agreement signed with the United States in the Qatari capital, Doha.
The US signed the deal with the Taliban on February 29 that required the Afghan government – which was not a signatory to the agreement – to free 5,000 Taliban prisoners, and for the armed group to release 1,000 pro-government captives in return.
