The government has started distributing wheat to 40,000 families at time when Internally Displaced Person (IDPs) are worried at the eve of winter and demanded more assistance, an official said on Sunday.
Aziz Rahman Amaq, director of the Natural Disaster Management Authority, told Pajhwok Afghan News the wheat had been donated by the Ministry of Agriculture for the needy and IDP families in the province.
He said the programme for wheat distribution started today (Sunday) and every family would get two bags of wheat. Each bag weighs 50 kilograms.
“We approached aid agencies for more assistance in order to help poor people ahead of winter and resolve their problems.”
Rabia, who displaced from Darzab district to Shiberghan as a result of fighting, voiced happiness over receiving two bags of wheat.
She said: “The wheat I have received will help us for a month. The continuation of such assistance will be a step in the right direction.”
She believed all IDPs were in dire direly of continued assistance, particularly food items and wood.
Mohammad Hassan, another resident of Darzab district, said: “I have been trying on a daily basis to find work to feed my family. But at times, I go without work.”
Governor Maulvi Lutfullah Azizi, during the wheat distribution ceremony, said the assistance was meant for IDPs and other needy families.
He said the wheat would be provided to 10,000 families affected by fighting and drought.
