The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) on Sunday expressed confidence that biometric devices would prove effective as the supplying company had assured there would be no technical lapses in the devices.

The IECC’s response comes after reports that faulty biometric devices might be used in this month’s presidential elections.

The presidential elections are scheduled on September 28 and the Independent Election Commission (IEC) has already expressed its preparedness to hold the ballot.

Qutbuddin Roidar, IECC’s deputy head, during a visit to eastern Nangarhar province, told Pajhwok Afghan News that all sensitive materials for elections had been dispatched to provincial capitals.

Referring to technical faults in biometric devices during last year’s elections, he said the supplier company had assured that the biometric devices were fully functional and there would be no issue during polls.

He said around 70 complaints had been registered with the IEC from different candidates, which would be addressed in due time.

Abdul Wakeel Hanifi, head of Nangarhar IECC, said officials had been tasked with collecting complaints at polling stations on Election Day. He called on people to register their complaints with IECC officials.

Zabihullah Wagari, provincial director of IEC in Nangarhar, said sensitive materials had been delivered to different offices and would be reaching districts according to a timetable.

He said 395 polling stations and 2,534 polling booths had been setup in Nangarhar, in which 28 directors, 158 deputy directors and 16,000 officials would discharge their duty on polling day.

He said the lack of women employees in far-flung areas remained, and the issue had been shared with the central office.
