Pakistan is facilitating talks between the United States and Afghan Taliban, Prime Minister Imran Khan has confirmed. The parleys are likely to begin in Dubai on Monday.
America recently asked him to facilitate peace negotiations with the Taliban, the prime minister said at a function in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Friday.
Washington used to browbeat Islamabad into doing more, but his government’s categorical position on the Afghan war had made the US to start urging him to facilitate talks with the Taliban, Khan claimed.
Representatives of the Afghan government, Taliban and the US are expected to meet in Dubai, an official, who did not want to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said: “When I used to say there is no solution to this problem other than negotiations, I was branded as Taliban Khan, but they now ask us to help them in initiating talks with the Taliban.”
