The United States should maintain a permanent military presence in Afghanistan to prevent terrorist groups from plotting the next 9/11-style attack, says a former Navy SEAL.
Dan Crenshaw, now a congressman from Texas, told a veterans’ workshop in Frederick the American public should be informed what objectives the US had in Afghanistan.
“We’re not explaining that if we let our enemies have the operational space they will commit another 9/11,” Crenshaw was quoted as saying by the Task & Purpose.
In response to a query, the former SEAL said the US needed to continue talks with the Taliban to accomplish its mission in Afghanistan. He stressed policymakers had to be clear on what that mission was.
The congressman, who lost an eye to an IED blast in Afghanistan, supported a continued troop presence similar to other large US military forces left stationed around the world after World War II.
