US renews support for Afghan reconciliation drive

The Trump administration has renewed its stout support for the Afghan government’s reconciliation process, says President Ashraf Ghani’s office.

US Special Advisor on Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad held out the assurance during a meeting with Ghani at the Presidential Palace in Kabul late on Sunday.

A statement from Ghani’s office said Khalilzad briefed the president on his trip to regional countries and reaffirmed the US support to the Afghan government and people.

The two sides discussed prospects for an Afghan-led reconciliation process, with Ghani highlighting his administration’s efforts for peace process and stability.

Second Vice President Sarwar Danish, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah and other high level officials also attended the meeting, the statement added.

On his arrival in Kabul, Khalilzad said he would use all his abilities to break the current stalemate in the Afghan conflict and in the reconciliation process.

Khalilzad also met with the former prominent Jihadi leader Abdul Rab Rasool Sayaf to discuss prospects for Afghan peace.

Sources close to Sayyaf revealed that the two sides held talks regarding the current situation of the country, specifically focusing on prospects for the revival of Afghan reconciliation process.

Khalilzad will also visit neighboring Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar as part of his 10-day swing through the region.
