UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday at a press conference said all five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) are united in seeking a stable Afghanistan and an inclusive government.
Guterres made the remarks after talks among the foreign ministers of Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
Guterres said that all five powers want a peaceful and stable Afghanistan where humanitarian aid can be distributed to vulnerable population without any problem.
He also said the five powers seek an inclusive government in which women and girls enjoy their rights.
The five powers seek “an Afghanistan where the rights of women and girls are respected, an Afghanistan that is not a sanctuary for terrorism, an Afghanistan with an inclusive government representing all sections of the population,” he said.
Guterres’ remarks come as the United Nations 76th General Assembly summit is ongoing in New York.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Quraishi said the Taliban must know that the world has expectations from them. “If they live up to those expectations, they would make it easier for themselves, they will get acceptability, which is required for recognition,” he said.
US President Joe Biden, on the sidelines of the UN assembly, said that the United States and Britain will continue supporting Afghanistan and will discuss how to help.
This year, at the UNGA, talks revolves around Afghanistan, COVID-19 and climate change.
