Officials from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said that “unconditional” humanitarian assistance must be mobilized in Afghanistan.
Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, who spoke at the 72nd session of the Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme, declared that some solutions need to be found to prevent an implosion of public services in Afghanistan.
“Millions of Afghans have been uprooted for more than 40 years, and recent developments have created new challenges. Failure to urgently implement a solution will aggravate the crisis,” he said.
In the meantime, internally displaced families have raised their voices over the lack of humanitarian assistance and deteriorating living conditions in Kabul.
Fazila, originally from Kunduz, lost her husband during fighting in the country. Fazila said that she is the head of an eight-member family which left their home and traveled to Kabul in recent weeks.
“We have neither food nor clothing to wear. Assistance has decreased and needy families cannot access the aid which is being sent by people or organizations.”
Negina was displaced as a result of war. She said: “No one is assisting us here. The winter is approaching day by day.”
Meanwhile, officials at the Ministry of Culture and Information are urging the international community to assist Afghans regardless of political issues.
“The countries that pledged aid must send it to Afghanistan. People seriously need aid,” said Noor Mohammad Motawakel, a member of the cultural commission in the ministry.
