UN says it will continue to engage with IEA

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Friday that the United Nations will continue to engage with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA).

This comes after the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (MPVPV) announced that it would no longer cooperate with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) because of its “constant false propaganda.”

Addressing a news conference, Dujarric called on the Islamic Emirate to open more avenues for diplomatic engagement.

“I think we’ve been very vocal on the decision to further make women’s presence almost disappear in Afghanistan.  In terms of the contacts with the de facto authorities, I mean, we will continue to engage with all stakeholders in Afghanistan, including the Taliban (IEA),” he said.

He added that the UN is working in Afghanistan impartially, in good faith and with a commitment to human rights and equality, and is working as mandated by the Security Council.
