Traders at Sher Khan Port say they’re extorted

Traders at the Sher Khan Port in northern Kunduz province allege they are extorted by some local authorities and as a result their problems have multiplied.
But Governor Abdul Jabbar Naeemi, during a visit to the Sher Khan Port, vowed to deal with individuals and institutions involved in extortion of traders in line with the law.
Provincial Council members also accompanied the governor on his visit to the port where he met officials and was briefed on matters relating to the port.
A representative of the port, Shamsullah, said besides security issues traders were asked for illegal money by different local institutions.
Another businessmen Hairat Faryabi demanded extension in the Sher Khan Port and identified insecurity and extortion as traders’ main issues.
He said it was the time to extend the Sher Khan Port I order to create better environment for work.

Provincial Council head Mohammad Yousuf Ayubi also asked the government to resolve issues traders faced at the dry port.
“Traders at the port need an industrial township with facilities like transport, terminal, railway line and others,” he said.
Police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Baqi Nuristani said efforts were being made to improve security of businessmen.
He said there was no security issue at the Sher Khan Port and that steps would be taken to resolve any security issue along the road leading to the port.
