The development of public health in any country is closely linked to the quality and standard production of medicines. In Afghanistan, ensuring the quality of pharmaceuticals is a critical necessity that must be rigorously monitored. The presence of substandard and low-quality medicines not only harms public health but also poses a significant challenge to the country’s healthcare sector.

Every year, millions of dollars’ worth of medicines are imported into Afghanistan. However, the lack of an effective quality control system has cast doubt and concern over their safety and efficacy. In many cases, low-quality medicines enter the country through border crossings, replacing standard medicines in the market and putting the lives of ordinary people at risk.

To prevent this situation, it is essential to establish an effective and reliable quality control system for all imported medicines. The Ministry of Public Health must closely monitor every step of the pharmaceutical import process to ensure that only drugs meeting international standards enter the market.

Additionally, developing Afghanistan’s domestic pharmaceutical industry should be among the country’s national priorities. Existing drug manufacturing factories are unable to operate according to international standards due to a lack of technical facilities, advanced technology, and financial support. The Afghan caretaker government must take serious steps to improve infrastructure, ensure the availability of raw materials, and train skilled professionals to support domestic manufacturers.

Creating a safe and reliable investment environment for international investors is equally important. If the government provides credible incentives to foreign investors in the pharmaceutical sector, Afghanistan can become a significant regional hub in this field.

Strengthening legal frameworks is also fundamental. Clear, effective, and internationally compliant laws for the import and production of medicines must be established to strictly prevent the production and importation of substandard medicines.

Standard testing centers for pharmaceutical quality control should be operational in all major border crossings and cities to prevent the entry of non-standard medicines. These centers will ensure the enforcement of quality standards at every stage of production, import, and export of medicines.

If the Afghan caretaker government takes serious action in these areas, Afghanistan will not only reduce its reliance on imported medicines but also establish a trustworthy healthcare system for its citizens. Producing standard medicines and ensuring the quality of imported pharmaceuticals is not just a governmental responsibility but also a national priority for saving lives, which must be implemented with the utmost seriousness.
