The United States and the Taliban have reached an agreement on a timeframe for troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, the group’s spokesman reportedly said on Friday.

“We have an agreement on a time frame for the withdrawal,” Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen told Pakistani newspaper Dawn from the venue of talks, Doha, over the phone. “Discussions are now focused on its implementation mechanism.”

He said that the sides had general discussions on Friday and would talk implementation on Saturday.

The US and the Taliban are holding ninth round of talks in Doha. Key issues in the talks are counter-terrorism assurances, troop withdrawal, intra-Afghan negotiations and ceasefire.

Shaheen refused to say what timeframe they agreed to. He said that a formal announcement would come following agreement on the implementation mechanism.
