Sources within the Taliban militant group say they are nearing an agreement with Americans over release of their fighters from Afghan government’s jails.
Talking to BBC Pashto service on condition of anonymity, a Taliban source said the group’s political representatives discussed the issue with American delegation, led by Ambassador Zalmay Khalilizad.
According to the source, the prisoners release is just a trust-building step for further discussions on political settlement of the Afghan war.
The source added that Taliban political representatives recently discussed the issue with Khalilzad in Islamabad.
There are around 3,000 pro-government prisoners with the militant group, but the number of Taliban inmates in government run jails reaches to almost 10,000.
The government confirms that around 8,000 people are in different jails over terrorism-related activities.
