At least 17 members of people’s uprising force were killed in an overnight Taliban attack in Afghanistan’s northern Takhar province, an official said on Sunday.
Mohammad Javad Hijri, a spokesman for provincial governor, told 1TV that four others were wounded after the insurgents attacked the forces’ base in Khwaja Bahauddin district.
He said that the forces were led by Malik Ahmad Tatar, a feared commander locally known as a ruthless enemy of the Taliban.
Hijri said that additional forces were dispatched to the site of the attack, adding the Taliban were driven back.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group has increased attacks on pro-government forces recently. The latest comes a day after Taliban killed 10 army soldiers in a bomb attack in southern Helmand province.
