A square near Kabul airport is to be renamed in honor of General Raziq, the police chief of Kandahar province, who was assassinated nearly two weeks ago.

The square is now called as Hamid Karzai International Airport Square.

The renaming was pledged by President Ashraf Ghani who met with Kandahar elders in the presidential palace on Monday.

The president also assured that the Police Academy in Kandahar to be named after the slain general.

General Raziq was killed when the provincial governor’s guard opened fire after a meeting with foreign security officials. The attack also killed the provincial head of intelligence agency.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and Afghan authorities said that the attack was planned in Pakistan, a charge Islamabad denied.

Amid claims of foreign forces’ involvement in the attack, Ghani said that the country’s enemies seek to disrupt national unity in Afghanistan and the country’s international relations with “baseless rumors.”
