Security forces have regained control of the Sara-i-Takht area of western Herat province after nine years, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said on Saturday.

Fawad Aman, deputy spokesman for MoD, told Pajhwok Afghan News the security forces launched air-and-ground operations three weeks ago in Ghor, Herat and Farah provinces.

In Ghor, Dara-i-Kamanj — a strategic area on the Herat-Ghor highway and a Taliban stronghold, was captured by the security forces, he said.

Aman said about 100 militants, including their commanders, had surrendered to the government and promised to fight against the Taliban alongside the security forces.

In Herat, the Dara-i-Takht locality of Chest-i-Sharif district was wrested back by the forces after nine years, he said, adding the area had a lot of importance for the insurgents.

“During these operations, the highway named “Number 2” — connecting Bamyan, Ghor and Herat — was also cleared of militants,” he added.

Aman informed 48 insurgents were killed, six of their huge hideouts destroyed and hundreds of landmines planted by the rebels and defused.
