Russia’s new strategic armaments do not fall under the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (the new START Treaty), Russia’s Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said at an annual session of the Washington-based Arms Control Association on Monday.
“I would simply like to say that this is not a subject matter of the treaty,” the ambassador said, commenting on the US calls to consider Russia’s new strategic armaments in conjunction with the New START Treaty.
The Russian ambassador stressed that Russia was not refusing to discuss its new strike systems with the United States as part of a bilateral dialogue on strategic stability.
Russia has made it clear it is ready to discuss this in the format of negotiations on strategic stability, the envoy said, commenting on the development of some of Russia’s new strategic weapons systems, including the Poseidon underwater drone. The Russian leadership announced last year about the creation of these weapon systems.
However, it is the United States and not the Russian Federation that is unready to resume these negotiations, the ambassador stressed.
